It looks at the conditions on the ground, how people are actually working, and whether the site documentation you are required to have is present and current. What it contains
Site audit report
A written record of what we found on site: physical conditions, work practices observed, documentation checked, and any gaps or non-compliance identified. Findings are set out plainly with the relevant legislation or standard named.
Actions register
Every issue identified, ranked by priority, so you know what to fix first. Each action is specific and practical rather than a general recommendation.
What We Check On Site
The audit covers the physical workplace and the documentation that should be present at the site. It is a snapshot of how your site is operating at the time of our visit.

Physical conditions
Equipment condition and guarding, housekeeping, storage, access and egress, signage, lighting, ventilation, noise, and any visible hazards.
Work practices
How people are actually working while we are there. Are the controls that should be in place being followed? Is PPE being used correctly? Are exclusion zones being respected?
Site documentation
SSSPs, task analysis, SWMS, permits to work, site induction records, and any other documents that should be physically present and current on site.
Emergency readiness
Evacuation signage, assembly points, first aid kit condition and accessibility, fire extinguisher servicing, and whether people on site know the emergency procedure.
PPE
Whether the right PPE is available, in good condition, and being used for the tasks being carried out.
Worker conversations
Brief conversations with people on site. Your workers usually know where the practical risks are. These are not formal interviews and are not about catching anyone out.

What the Law Requires
Under Section 36 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, every PCBU must ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health and safety of workers and anyone else affected by the work. The General Risk and Workplace Management Regulations 2016 set specific requirements for workplace conditions, facilities, and equipment.
A site audit is one way of checking whether those requirements are being met on the ground. If WorkSafe visits your site after an incident, the question is whether the physical conditions and work practices were safe at the time. A recent, dated audit report showing what you found and what you did about it is direct evidence.
